About the Tsukuba University Athletic Department

The Tsukuba University Athletic Department is established within Tsukuba University with the vision of “creating the best school sports program.” The department aims to achieve educational reforms through sports. It focuses on three main principles: establishing sports activities for which the school is responsible and fostering human resources, creating contribution projects that maximize the value of having sports in school, and widely sharing these efforts with schools nationwide to create new school sports jointly. It aims for a transformation in school sports education.

Next Generation Leader Development Program

The visionary leader training program for Tsukuba University’s athletic teams, held since 2020 as a pioneer in university sports education, was conducted this year with an enhanced focus on further partnership collaboration. Captains, vice-captains, and managers from 15 of the top competitive teams across the country gathered for this two-day workshop, which aimed not only at improving their respective teams but also envisioning the future of their respective sports and, ultimately, the future of university sports.

What stood out to you in this training?

The phrase that stuck with me is 'only action is truth.' I self-evaluated and realized that there were many things I thought about but didn't act on, and many things I acted on but could have expressed in a more innovative way. I am aware that my actions have a significant impact on the team. As a leader of a team aiming to be number one in Japan, I will continue to act accordingly.
The point that 'a leader's actions reflect upon the team' resonated with me. We are aiming to win the All-Japan tournament and to be the best in Japan. Up until now, we were solely focused on winning, but from now on, we want to value our identity, as in 'what kind of team we want to be when we win.' We want to win only after realizing our ideal team.

Visualize the process of acquiring skills to achieve goals

The partnership project between Tsukuba University Athletic Department and Achievement Corporation has started the “effect verification” of the Achievement Technology Course. By effectively utilizing the techniques taught in Achievement’s public training, we will objectively demonstrate the necessary process to acquire the “power to achieve goals” together with Tsukuba University Athletic Department.

A dialogue between Tsukuba University President Kyosuke Nagata and Achievement CEO Satoshi Aoki.

In recent years, various troubles have come to light in school sports. The underlying cause is a prevailing win-at-all-costs mentality, where both coaches and athletes feel bound by the belief that “if you don’t win, there’s no meaning,” leading to various distortions. Also, habits of controlling athletes through high-pressure reprimanding, threats, punishments, etc., persist. To challenge these values and refocus on the original purpose of sports, Tsukuba University established the “Athletic Department” to maximize the value of sports and bring about changes in school sports. In light of this, President Kyosuke Nagata of Tsukuba University, who is leading this initiative, was invited to dialogue with Satoshi Aoki of Achievement Corporation.
